Aloha

When someone ask you what is the most popular Hawaiian word you know? “Aloha” is the first word you’ll think. This is the most sacred and powerful word in Hawaii. It has the power to transform one’s view, heal one’s negative feelings, and help to protect and guide one’s lifetime journey. They say that it means hello, goodbye, love, compassion, welcome and good wishes, affection, peace, compassion and mercy. And also if used as an English greeting it means to say goodbye and the mostly used as hello. In accordance to ethymologists, the meaning of the word aloha comes from “alo” means presene, front or face and the word “ha” means breath or sometimes given as “the presence of breath” or “the breath of life”.

To help us remember the letters of the Hawaiian word A-L-O-H-A: A – AKAHAI (careful offering) translated to Hawaiian meaning kindness, modesty, gentleness, unpretentiousness, being unassuming, unobtrusive, tenderness; L – LOKAHI (to obtain oneness) meaning unity, agreement, accord, unison, harmony; O – ‘OLU’OLU (cool, refreshing) meaning agreeable, pleasantness, amiability, contentment, happiness, graciousness, congeniality, cordiality, affability; H – HA’AHA’A (low) meaning humility, humbleness, self-effacing, modesty. A – AHONUI (great breath) meaning patience, perseverance, endurance, long suffering, tolerance. LOKOMAIKA’I is another Hawaiian word that uses the true meaning of the word Aloha, when translated it means the good inside, good will, good disposition, generosity, grace, kindness, humanity, benevolence, beneficence and lastly loving kindness.

There is one Hawaii’s most famous song that was written by Liliuokalani the last queen of the Hawaiian Islands, Aloha ‘Oe.
